Bungalow Residence
Last fall, we had the pleasure of working with an amazing couple to update their 80’s raised bungalow. From a small, partitioned main floor to an inviting, open concept space – the owners are now proud to entertain their friends and family.

Before

First impressions matter. We replaced the pet-stained carpeted stairs with new red oak ones. The colour matched banister and metal spindles completed the sleek new look.

Once on the main level, you walk into a bright open space with the kitchen now expanded to where the dining room used to be. Custom white cabinets provide a timeless feel, with full height uppers to give extra storage. Special touches included crown moulding and seamless Corian countertops.

Before
The old 80’s kitchen was showing its age with battered cabinets, peeling vinyl flooring, and water stains from a previous leak.

Before
The owners complained about the cramped layout of the main floor. A wall divided the kitchen space from the dinning/living room.

Together we revised the main floor layout to remove the kitchen/dining room wall. Architectural reviews confirmed it was a non-load bearing, allowing the owners to save money by not needing a beam.
Once demoed and cleared out, the room instantly felt brighter and bigger – we knew we made the right decision. New potlights replaced the old builder light fixtures.

Kitchen cabinets to be installed.

The only part of the kitchen that stayed the same was the sink placement. We added more counter space around the new single bowl sink. Modern subway tile was installed around the window for a completed look.

We like tucking the microwave under the kitchen island to keep it out of sight, but still have easy access.

We used Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore (OC-45) on the walls, baseboards and ceilings, with different sheens.

The living room was also refreshed by removing the popcorn ceilings and repainting the fireplace.

In addition to paint, we removed the base of the fireplace and brought the flooring right to the wall. All electrical switches were replaced and leveled for a symmetrical look.

With the new layout, this major transformation was possible. The owners are enjoying their new space and can’t believe the improvements to storage, and abundance of natural light.
