We took this dated, builder bathroom and turned it into a modern spa retreat. Part of the planning process is figuring out how the room is used. These owners decided to get rid of their bathtub (that was rarely used), in order to create a larger shower area.

Retro to Spa Bathroom
This outdated primary ensuite bathroom didn’t even have a door! We transformed this burnt orange space into a calm, spa like experience for our clients.
The tub was in an awkward angle, and don’t even mention the tub filler. We completely gutted this bathroom while keeping the layout and size the same. Adding a large soaking tub, surrounded by a wall to wall @coriandesign top, and curbless shower makes this bathroom look way more modern.

🔹We opted for a shower curtain vs glass, giving a more open, softer feel to the bathroom. Plus, less squeegee-ing to do! If your home has hard water, this keeps your bathroom looking new without those etched hard water stains on glass.

SAVE this bathroom reno checklist 📌
We love transforming clients bathrooms to give them a beautiful place to enjoy. After years of doing these projects, we’ve mastered a simple formula you can use for your own reno - whether it’s a DIY project or you’re working with a contractor.
Here’s what you should consider:
SHOWER FLOOR - You have the option of doing a flush curbless tiled floor, a tiled curb, or an acrylic shower pan. All can look great, but go from the more expensive to least expensive depending on your budget.
PLUMBING FIXTURES - You get what you pay for. I recommend always installing a handheld shower arm in addition to the main shower head. This is a must for cleaning. We’re a big fan of Riobel fixtures from @houseofrohl
VANITIES - You also get what you pay for, but surprisingly you don’t always have to go custom. @homehardware has amazing options at their Home Building Centers, where you can special order beautiful vanities at a great price. Look for dovetail, wooden drawers, and painted doors for a more upscale look.
LIGHTING - If you’re on a budget, keep it simple with strategically placed pot lights. Get the gimbal ones where you can point them towards the vanity mirror - giving you perfect lighting versus that downwards light that makes you look tired. If your budget allows, we recommend adding wall sconces beside the mirror (in addition to some pot lights) for a layered lighting effect.
Bathroom Reno Checklist:
- Heated floors, with or without wifi enabled thermostat
- Vanity with ample counter space, backsplash and side splash
- Single hole faucet
- Shower kit with handheld
- Upgraded toilet (American Standard 2794104020)
- Silent bathroom fan (@panasonic )
- Towel hooks (minimum 2)
- Custom sized mirror (with or without metal edge)
- Custom shower glass (or shower kit if using acrylic base)
- Shower wall tiles (we love large format tiles for a sleek look)
- Matching grout (lately we’ve been using grout from @custombuildingproducts)

HOW LONG DOES A RENO TAKE?
ANSWER: Depends 🙂
This was a full home gut job, three floors fully renovated. Our client took out walls between the old kitchen and dining. We removed all the quirky angled walls, added new stairs, new bathrooms… EVERYTHING. This reno took 5 MONTHS to complete (from demo to final touches).
Here’s a rough estimate of what you can expect for other projects:
4 PIECE BATHROOM - 4 WEEKS
KITCHEN - 5 WEEKS
BASEMENT - 6 WEEKS
MAIN FLOOR - 7 WEEKS

Who says you need a BIG kitchen? 🤔
For this farmhouse renovation, we decided to keep the kitchen size the same. By having easy access to the fridge, sink, and stove, it allows you to move seamlessly and easily between working areas of the kitchen. That’s the triangle!
Keeping the same size helped our clients save some $$$ and instead put it towards design features like shiplap ceilings, full-height backsplash, and upgraded kitchen cabinets.

F A R M H O U S E Transformation 🏠✨
Can you believe this is the same home? This one-bedroom farmhouse holds a lot of special memories for the owners, so we made sure to keep this in mind when renovating. The overall layout stayed the same, we added new steps, hardwood throughout. Fresh trim work and paint made this an inviting place to host their growing family get togethers.
The owners added special touches like an antique plate feature wall in the dining room, their favourite artwork, and even low-cost IKEA storage cabinets which we framed in to look custom. Did you spot them? 👀
This goes to show - you can massively transform your home without re-jigging layouts and knocking down walls 👊
