Easy Rule for Ordering New Interior Doors
By Alex Kennedy
The two things you need to know when ordering interior doors are the size and swing of the door. I always order pre-hung doors that come with a door already hung on the new frame. This saves time because you don’t have to use a router and install hinges on site. All you have to do is hang the door and install your casing.
Size of the Door
If the door has already been removed, you can simply take the measurements of the rough opening and give them to the door supplier. These are the measurements from the floor to the 2×4 at the top, and from side to side. They will supply you with a pre-hung door that will fit in the opening.
If the existing door is still on the hinges, you can measure the size of the door itself. Your supplier will give you a door with a pre-hung frame to match.
Swing of the Door
Knowing whether your new door is going to be a right-hand door or left-hand door is key when placing your order online, or at your local manufacturer.
When I started in construction, I used to order doors by describing how the door opened. I would say “when I’m standing in front, the handle is on the left and it opens towards the right”. You can see how easy it is to order the wrong type of door. Save yourself from a costly mistake by following this easy rule:
- Stand with your back to the hinges
- If it opens to the left it’s a LH (left hand)
- If it opens to the right, it’s a RH (right hand)
There you go! Now you’re ready to get some doors!
