5 Lighting Secrets I Wish I Knew When I Started Renovating
By Alex Kennedy
Lighting is one of the biggest finishing touches for a renovation, however it’s important to plan where your lighting will go, and what type, in the early stages. We like to do a walkthrough of the home to identify any lights that need to be moved or added. Don’t forget to look at where the light switches are located. Your electrician will thank you.
There’s no right or wrong, but most people follow the same old guidelines on what goes where. These five easy lighting secrets can be the difference between a renovation that’s just standard or STUNNING!
1. SHOWER LIGHT
You don’t really NEED a potlight in the shower. It can be very bright, and most mornings you won’t even use it. Skip it and opt for a stylish fixture in the center of the bathroom area.
2. BATHROOM MIRROR SCONCES
I don’t do makeup, but everyone in my life who does, tells me that this a night and day difference. Better to have lighting come from the sides vs down from the top like a flashlight.
3. KITCHEN ISLAND PENDANT
Pendants over the kitchen island aren’t a must have (especially if your ceilings are 8′ high)! Potlights give plenty of lighting and are flush, giving you a full view of your beautiful kitchen!
4. BEDROOM SCONCES
This has become a signature of Alex Kennedy Homes. It frees up so much space on the night tables and a great option to give you soft lighting (for reading). It becomes a beautiful design feature, giving the room a bit more interest. Some wall lights are even plug ins – so no electrician necessary.
5. BEDROOM FAN LIGHT
Fans remind me of being on vacation. For some reason the breeze makes it so nice for sleeping in the room. Plus, if you don’t have air conditioning, they’re a life saver.
